Aluminum alloy wheels actually entered the civilian car market in the 1970s. Before that, only racing cars had the "privilege" from lightweight aluminum alloy wheels. When this kind of technology gradually matures and can be applied to the civilian vehicle market, a large number of aluminum alloy wheel manufacturers appear, such as BBS, RAY, etc.


In pursuit of further weight reduction, forged wheels appeared. In the 1980s, forged wheels began to rise.


In 1983, WashiBeam got the qualification of BBS forged wheel OEM, and cooperated with the German BBS company to establish a joint venture.


In 1986, RAYS brought in a 5,500-ton forging press and began to produce high-strength forged wheels.


Forged wheels are denser and stronger than casting wheels.Spokes and rims can be made thinner, resulting in a lighter weight, and the wheels are further closer to the ground to enhance handling. At the same time, the power transmission loss will be reduced, and the power on the wheels will be stronger. It is very helpful for racing and sports cars.


Casting alloy wheels are heavier, but forged wheels are more expensive, so the technology of flow forming appears. To put it simply, it is to make a wheel embryo by casting, and then rotate and press the rim through special equipment to elongate gradually and make the rim thinner.Among it, the metal molecules are arranged more closely, the strength is higher, and it is more similar to the forged wheels.Flow formed wheels have higher density, higher strength and greater durability.

The strength of the flow formed is lower than forged. The strengthened part  is the rim, but the strength of the spokes and the center part is still same as the casting.About the strength of the rim, it is not as strong as high pressure forging, and it can only be said to be infinitely close.

The weight of wheel has a lot to do with its design, the thickness of the rim and spokes will affect the weight of the wheel. Because the material strength of forged wheels is high enough,no matter the thickness the rims or spokes are made,they can still have considerable durability and strength. If you don't care about strength, the cast wheels can also be made very light.

Although it is said that magnesium alloys have insufficient ductility, they have high strength and light weight, so racing cars like to use magnesium alloy wheels. Today, with the development of science and technology, the allocation of alloy proportions in aluminum-magnesium alloys can solve these problems. TE37 once introduced magnesium forged wheel. Carrera GT's aluminum-magnesium forged wheels were manufactured by BBS. As early as 1991, BBS began its trial production of modern forged aluminum-magnesium alloy wheels. Since then, FZ-MG forged aluminum-magnesium alloy wheels have been introduced, giving car-modification owners the opportunity to try the benefits of aluminum-magnesium alloys.

RAYS and BBS, which have been in the forefront in the past, have always been the leader in the forged wheel industry. RAYS took the lead in purchasing a 10,000-ton forging machine to manufacture forged wheels that the strength is stronger than that of ordinary manufacturers' forged wheels. The TE37SL later introduced is heavier than TE37 light. BBS adheres to the three-time forging technology, at the same time, continues to exert force on the wheel material. At present, in addition to the breakthrough of aluminum-magnesium alloy, there are also aviation-specific 7000 aluminum alloy forging materials to choose.

Carbon fiber is a lightweight material that has become more and more popular in automobiles in recent times. However, in terms of wheels, because of the poor durability of carbon fiber, heat resistance, and production difficulties, many car manufacturers did not choose carbon fiber materials. In recent years, with the breakthroughs in technology and manufacturing, some car manufacturers have begun to use wheels made of this material. Ford Mustang GT350R and GT originals use carbon fiber wheels made in Australia. The 911 Turbo S has also begun offering optional carbon fiber composite wheels, and it is also made of carbon fiber produced by themself.
